Yet, for most of the time and for most of us; simple works best.

Even as we get busier and are offered fancier gadgets, tricksy cars and order complex espresso drinks we still choose things like: flip flops, macaroni & cheese, post-it notes, whiteboards, stay-cations and duct tape.

The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.~Hans Hofmann, Introduction to the Bootstrap, 1993

Working on the front line for startups I always hear “We need X, and Y feature”. Customers want to see more, they want to hear bells and honk horns. They want features that they think will make their lives easier. In some cases, their insight is the guiding light to making or breaking the product and does help their business. Other times it is a matter of teaching them how a simple tool is powerful, and the value in simple vs every feature under the sun.

A few of my favorite simple things:

The Spoon:

Even while spending weeks in the Alpine Wilderness, I never doubted my trusty spoon. Under my social media presence is a true wilderness girl that loves packing up a couple pairs of clothes, hopping on a horse and hitting the trails. Cooking in a cast iron Dutch oven each evening I never pulled out my army knife and stirred the stew. It was my simple, easy to clean, stir and eat spoon that kept me content for my offline excursions.

Food:

When I begin growing gray hair I want to open a simple lunch café near a river. Serving the basics, grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, iced tea and garden salads all made from ingredients grown locally or right on the café property. I want this to be an inexpensive, feel good sort of place for patrons to have exceptionally good tasting and good memory food. Simple, tasty and affordable.

Campfires:

Entertaining twenty plus guests can be pulled off with a simple recipe: Marshmallows roasted on a stick then squished onto a piece of chocolate in-between two graham crackers.

I tend the fire keeping the whole circle of guests happily entertained talking, and roasting. In the time we have been hosting campfires people have found new customers, new workout buddies even new jobs by attending our smore roasting low-key evenings.

This simple evening event has become a friend and family favorite eliminating my assumption that more stuff, and entertainment made a better party. Smores voted #1 Thompson event 3 years running.

Twitter:

A simple prompt of “What are you doing?” in 140 characters is what Twitter asked. Me, I got a whole new life chapter facilitated by this simple social media platform. While some begged, and pleaded for more features Twitter was able to satisfy 150 million users and growing to connect, share and engage.

So why is someone who loves social media, and marketing talking about simple? Well, it’s simple. [ha ha] There is always a push for more, better, faster, shinier and more attention grabbing. Yet, I think deep down we appreciate simple more than we like to admit. We enjoy the spoon, our favorite basic and easy to make foods, easy non-stress ways to gather people we love, and we want to connect with people we don’t know.

Celebrate the simple.

You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need. ~Vernon Howard

Watching, and learning from entrepreneurs, marketing and cubicle dwelling folks here are some of the ideas I came up with that seemed to be common habits.

Understanding that not every day is full of sunshine I came up with 21 habits that seem to keep the best marketers focused and ready for action.

1. Appreciation of their team, job and opportunities.
The best way to love your job is to appreciate what you have. Waking up worrying about reports or meetings might steal your focus but happy marketing people remind themselves that they get to create connections and foster long lasting relationships. Don’t sweat the spilled coffee.

2. Choose a community wisely
The importance of networking is second to the importance of finding a great community. I LOVE Seattle 2.0 and HopsAndChops, both are supportive welcoming communities of entrepreneurs that have big ideas (like me) and are taking action every day to make those ideas a successful reality. Connect online and in real life.

Marketers are great at making connections but happier if they make long lasting relationships with key people that will cheer them on when things get tough. Even if it just little things like retweeting your event promoting and sending a few introduction emails out to help.

3. Considerate and Compassionate
It is easy to get caught up in the daily distractions. In the big picture it is important for marketers to respect others in their field and be compassionate with others are struggling or have made a mistake. Happy marketing people know the importance of acknowledging their fellow professionals and supporting them.

4. Stay Fresh and Current
Networking, going to conferences, reading blogs, and watching how-to videos will help you stay in touch with the latest and greatest. Know your facts, ask questions engage with professionals in your industry. Making you feel enriched, challenged and keep your sense of curiosity for your job, career and industry alive.

Mix it up a little bit. Go and visit the nerds at one of Scott Hanselman’s nerd dinners, or go to a Social Media Club or a Biznik event. The whole Seattle area is rich in activities and events to expand your experience, network and knowledge.

5. Problems? Solutions!
Due dates approaching, goals seem to be slipping? Happy marketing people know that problems are full of opportunities. Use your clever problem solving skills to reach out to resources, research and bring ideas for solutions to the table. Don’t let the problems get you down.

6. Love Social Media? How about Print Design? Do it.
Marketing is a broad category. You could wear many hats or be a specialist in SEO, Social Media or designing t-shirts. You spend and invest a great deal of your LIFE into your job. So do something you love. If you aren’t doing what you love work with your employer to move in that direction or it might be time to start looking at Craigslist for a new opportunity.

7. Smell the Roses
There is more to life than analytics, WordPress and dare I even say it, Twitter. I spend time every day taking care of our little farm critters. Living in Maple Valley I am surrounded by really beautiful forests, parks and wildlife. Find your happy place and spend time there, don’t say you are going to jog around the lake and never go. Invest in yourself and spend time outside, fresh air and really take in the beauty around you.

8. Add a little Goof to your attitude
Life is full of joy, and that joy often is shared through being a little goofy. Have a girls, or guys night out and invite Ben & Jerry over, watch comedy, look at funny cat pictures and don’t take things too seriously. Don’t forget to let yourself have a little slack, no one is perfect so develop the ability to laugh at yourself.

9. I’m Sorry & Forgiveness
The most successful people don’t make all the money. The best marketers, entrepreneurs and even cubicle dwellers are successful because they know how to say “I’m sorry”, and “I forgive you” and genuinely mean it. Holding stress and grudges only hurts you. The same goes with yourself, send out a weird tweet that might not be the best reflection of your brand. It is okay, the world will go on so learn and forgive yourself.

10. Thank you bunches!
People love to help, especially now that social media has made it so easy to share content it is also that easy to tell them thank you. The best marketing people look for ways to say thank you more than they spend time looking for new content that might go viral. Say thanks, say it often. Might seem trival yet you will make someone else feel great for supporting you and your brand which I guarantee will also make you feel pretty good too.

11. Relationships are invaluable
It gets rough, trust me. There are going to be days where you can’t even get a pigeon to pay attention to anything you have to say. You will be frustrated and the one thing you can do is tell people how much you care about them. Even when things are rough acknowledge hard work, nurture relationships and if you can’t keep commitments tell people early. Spend time writing personalized notes, not blanket emails and even when things are rough come back to the table after you have cooled off and show your love and appreciation for those you work with. Connect with people, good people + good people = great communities.

12. Walk the Talk
Marketing can be a lot of talk before there is any action. The best and happiest marketing professionals take action that meets or exceeds their fancy speeches.

13. R&R – Rest and Relaxation
Being in a creative problem solving fast paced job means having the energy and focus to keep up and produce high quality work. The only way creative professionals stay sane is with excellent self care. Yoga, meditation, exercise, eating well, enough sleep are all ways to keep your mind fresh. Limit alcohol and late night events.

14. Avoid the Watercooler
The trap of falling into gossip is not only a waste of time but a great way to burn bridges with great people. Don’t get overly concerned with what other people say, think, wear whatever. Great marketing people are expressive, accepting and avoid conversations that focus on hurtful comments or judgments. It does take time and it is hard not to make comments, that seem okay at the time but later I think, “Geez, why did I say that?”. Everyone has the right to live their own life that includes you.

15. Positive Outlook
Life is Good. Seriously, have an attitude of optimism and you will be 100% easier to work with than people that arrive at the meeting table with a glass half empty. Think positive, and look for solutions the best marketing people are able to replace negative thoughts with positive ones almost instantly.

16. Love makes the world go round
If you look beyond the details like resumes, follower numbers and how many Linkedin recommendation someone has and see them for being one heck of an awesome human being it is going to be much easier to love them. Accept those around you; yes even the folks in IT. Love them even when they are frustrated, you are frustrated and nothing seems to be going right.

17. Don’t Take Your Ball and Go Home
The answer to those days you want to go home and hide under your bed is: Get back in the game.

Focus on what you want, and break down your big goal into little tiny achievable ones. Don’t give up, but be flexible as things change.

18. Think Ahead
Being flexible is great, but being able to be flexible based on facts is why we love analytics. The happiest marketers accept that even with great data, an awesome team and fantastic resources there are still things they can control and that’s okay. Determining what things are risks and what could hurt your team, your project and business is essential. Don’t be the dude that is sweating after losing two key people in your team and having to explain to management that you can’t make deadlines.

19. Water not Soda
Professionals that carry a steal water bottle and skip the soda, and limit the caffeine are giving their body the hydration it needs without a bunch of random chemicals from soda and energy altering effects of caffeine. Great marketers are aware of how their choices affect those around them, buy not buying water bottles they reduce waste and encourage others to bring their own bottle to work, the gym or on the road.

20. Being Awesome
Be genuine and you are being awesome. Don’t believe anyone that tells you if you were “A” you would be better than “B”. The best marketing professionals are easy to spot, they have a sense of calm, yet excited about their work and self confident. Do the best you can do, ask for feedback from trusted people like mentors and be genuine.

21. 100% of the time
The only person that can decide how you feel is you. Great marketing people have the ability not to let business matters get under their skin, they understand how important personal relationships are and make sure to invest and work at their friendships. Take responsibility for your own emotions, moods, attitudes, thoughts and your actions. The successful professionals are the first to admit when they have made a mistake and don’t avoid conversations to help repair relationships.Similar Posts:

Impressive Features

Speaking in car talk, if Hootsuite was an engine this would be the do it yourself mechanic’s dream engine bay. Everything is easy to get to, navigate and tinker with. If you were talking food this would be the best cup of chocolate pudding you have ever had with no bottom. There seems to be no end to the features of Hootsuite , can’t wait for you to try it out and be amazed. You might even fall in love with the ease in which you can manage all of your social media channels.
There is something natural about peanut butter and jelly that everyone from the age of 3 to 99+ understands is scrumptious way to enjoy an afternoon. There is a natural chemistry between startup companies and social media. There are brands launching through social media even before they have websites. Social media is a conductive tool that in many ways levels the playing field between big brands and new startup competition. Startups can reach customers and their markets easier than ever before.

There is something about PB&J that is instantly satisfying. Before you even sink your teeth into the sandwich you know you are going to enjoy it. Social media is a similar adventure. No matter what you fill your social media channels up with you are going to enjoy the adventure of networking, creating connections and even if you so choose solidifying those relationships in real life.

If you are thinking social media is a good tool for your startup, then your first goal is to grab all the social media accounts under your brand name. The next ingredient is simple – find people you want to listen to. The best place to start is poking around your favorite blogs to find their Twitter name. Click that, click follow there is your peanut butter. Finding your community is the sticky goodness, this becomes your value center, the people you would listen to anyways through their blogs, or you would jump all over buying tickets and attending conferences if they were speaking.

Engaging with your community is the marionberry jam. I would place bets that if you are a startup you have limited amount of time to truly engage outside the world of keeping the business moving forward and feeding everyone who works for you. However, social media gives you a perfect opportunity to refresh your brain, engage with some people you admire and even your customers. Adding precious connections to you new venture while also building a humanistic brand.

The wonder bread really is keeping yourself organized, and not feeling bad when you don’t read every tweet, status update on Facebook. Be genuine, enjoy your sandwich of social media and startup harmony.Similar Posts:

Digital Mention is my “professional” website for all things digital, social media and integrated marketing related. It was built with my belief that the future of digital (and the world in general) is an online mention married with engagement, interaction and conversing. I basically “geek out” with it!

Marketing Sprinkled with Social Media

I love that it’s a form of marketing, and that it’s the form based around “social interaction.” I have been passionate about Marketing since high school, when I went to nationals for DECA. And as soon as I dabbled into the social media part of Marketing I never looked back!

Sarah’s New Web Adventure:

My brand new website sums it up perfectly: www.sarahkayhoffman.com
I am a total health/fitness/foodie and full-of-life individual. I wear a cowgirl hat a lot. I love country music. And I’m a homebody. “My cup floweth over” when I’m with my husband and our two dogs!

Two People Sarah Admires on Twitter:

@NikisNotes – She is a girl who mixes brains with passion, beauty and a huge heart, and tweets about a combination of topics that give an overall sense of “goodness.” She will tweet about philanthropy, eco-fashion, people, health and wellness. read more …
@digitalroyalty – She truly delivers happiness all over the digital world! With 1,323,643 followers and counting, you would think the DigitalRoyalty has no time for daily interaction. But she does. And I believe that gives her even more credibility among her followers, clients and potentials clients. read more …

Responding to Social Media Hesitation

I don’t respond right away. I find out why, hear them out and then make my case as the “devil’s advocate” to what they’re saying. At the end of the day, if I haven’t persuaded someone then I probably don’t want to converse on the topic with them anyways. They don’t “get it,” and that’s extremely unfortunate to me because there is a whole new world of opportunity with and through it!

Advice on Building Your Personal Brand

Stay consistent! If you are going to use @iamsocool for your Twitter handle, then you should use that in ALL networks (or as many as you can)

Be real! Write, tweet, talk, post, connect, engage, etc with the things that actually interest you. Don’t put out things you think people want to see because once you choose to do that, people start associating your “brand” with those things.

Check out: #MakeMeMarketable

Social Media Opens Doors

Social media has opened a million doors for me. I have been fortunate to network with so many great people and then capitalized on those relationships via IRL meetups! Professionally, it has landed me everything I’ve had in the past couple of years. It landed me with Sears!

Tools to Stay Organized

I have so many! Here are some of my most favorite “Tools:” Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Rapportive and SocialOomph.

With over 55 million tweets a day finding great tweeters might seem a bit overwhelming. There are people Tweeting left and right from just about every corner of the globe. Here are some ways to find great people on Twitter, blogs to read and event to go to.

Recommendations

First off I read – a lot. Novels seem to catch my attention every once awhile however I love relevant engaging blogs. Within those blogs I heard great insight from the authors as they share their experiences, ideas and even interviews with their networks.

As I read those blogs I become acquainted with the author and to be totally honest earn trust. So when I visit their blogs and see their blogroll I take their recommendations very seriously. As the people they have listed are most always people I #MustFollow.

Check out some of these great examples of simple blogrolls:

What I LOVE about blogrolls is that I get introduced to some great people that may not be glowing on my Twitter feed, not in the Seattle area of just somehow haven’t entered into my radar. If you don’t have a blogroll or some kind of recommended reads list you should. They are easy, and a trained monkey could add them if you are running WordPress.Similar Posts:

Good people + Good people = Great communities.

I am always delighted to introduce people and see their relationships bloom.

There are a lot of great ways to meet great people. However I also think there are a lot of great ways to introduce great people to other great people you already know.

Isn’t that the point of social media?

Personally I am a big fan of using Facebook events. They are easy to setup and invite people conveniently on a site they already use. Even on fan pages creating an event is simple especially when sending out reminder messages that can be filtered by how the guest responded.

On a personal level when I think of people that facilitate and grow strong connected communities I instantly think of Shauna Causey. When attending the Bigfoot Conference in Bremerton Shauna bluntly said – “You should come to SMC (Seattle Social Media Club) events! Be great to have you there!” She is approachable, knowledgeable and welcoming. Always reaching out and connecting people, genuinely listening and loving the great community she enriches and is a part of.

When it comes to raising awareness for a cause social media boosts awareness and participation across imaginable distances. Scott Hanselman regularly hosts #NerdDinner in Bellevue Washington and enthusiastically shares his passion for development, and all things nerdy. He is connects nerds with other nerds and has created a strong community of talent, and friendships. I even nerded out learning about Microsoft’s Web Matrix. Scott is currently running a campaign to raise money to fight diabetes.

When it comes to businesses that do an excellent job utilizing social media to connect good people to good people I think of SnoRidge Crossfit. By nature Crossfit has a community that removes any feeling of the counter between customer and trainer. Because it isn’t so much customer and trainer as it is friend and friend who knows how to do Crossfit. SnoRidge has been exceptional in being open to connecting on a personal level on Facebook. They don’t depend on their group page to connect with customers, the owners and trainers Tom and Michelle Nugent and trainer Moe all connect online. They “Like” posts that people from the gym post about health, fitness and give comments of support and encouragement when needed. They are actively engaged on Facebook on a personal friendship level. The level of connection on social media is a direct reflection of the experience a person feels at the box. Everyone is warm and welcoming and supportive no matter what level of fitness.

Key Points:

Reach Out: Invite people to events, and communicate you value them

Introduce: A short intro to the rest of the group starts conversations

Be Genuine: Demonstrate the true you, the true human side of your business

Be personal: Build trust, develop and share real connection

Appreciate: Say “Thank you” – A lot

Bio:

I am originally from Buffalo, went to college in Syracuse then followed some friends down to Raleigh after I graduated college. I absolutely love living in Raleigh (not to mention the weather) and it is a great place for young business professionals. Once I moved down to Raleigh, I found a job with a SaaS company in their marketing department. Little did I know that would be the job that got me hooked onto Internet Marketing. They gave me control of a $60k/month PPC account (which I probably had no business working with at the time) and they let me learn the ropes of Google Adwords. Once I started to learn how Adwords worked, I became addicted to learning how to drive traffic to websites.

My next two jobs were both with Internet Marketing agencies where I really improved my skills as an SEO and overall marketer. I was able to take the things I have learned through reading various industry blogs/books and put them to use.

Just recently I just started my own internet marketing company called Search Creatively about 4 months ago and am in the whole entrepreneurial mode. I will say that running your own business is a lot different than just the normal 9-5 job, but is has been a fun adventure!

About StayOnSearch

I started StayOnSearch in 2008, as a way to not only help other internet marketers with things I have learned throughout my experiences, but to actually practice what I preached. As I started working with clients, I would always say you need to be adding new, fresh content to your site. When a client asked me…”Well where is your blog?” I said it was about time to start doing what I was recommending to clients.

Over the last 3-6 months, the blog has grown so much in terms of content creation, daily traffic and subscribers. I have also launched the Link Builders Toolkit, which is a an awesome reference for anyone who is involved in building links for their website or clients websites. Personally, I am really excited about the direction it has gone and have a number of great things in the mix that will be getting rolled out soon.

We are also looking for part-time bloggers to help contribute to StayOnSearch. Please contact me via the blog if you are interested in becoming a part-time blogger.

Small Businesses & SEO

Small businesses should be paying attention to SEO and Internet Marketing in general more than ever before. Here is the reason…Google, Yahoo, Bing Local Business Centers, Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, Groupon, LivingSocial, Twitter, Meetup, and the list keeps going. We are seeing that internet marketing is becoming more localized and targeted than ever before.

I think one of the hardest tasks for an agency to do, is pull small-business owners away from what they are comfortable doing. Shifting their mass-market mentalities into extremely relevant and trackable marketing. Someone who has been doing Yellow Page ads for years, is starting to see that it is not doing what it once was for them. So as Internet Marketers, we need to be educated them on the new tactics small business owners can take to reach out to their target market.

Easy SEO Wins

This probably has been said only a thousand times, but having keyword-rich title tags. Especially for a small, localized business you may be able to add a local keyword-rich title tag to your homepage and your site may show up on the 1st page of Google (of course it is not always that easy).

The other would be content, content, content….it really needs to be something that every business owner should work into their daily schedule. Have a place on your website where you can share industry ideas, events going on, company news, specials/promotions, basically anything that would help build your overall credibility and keep the site fresh and dynamic.

Social Media SEO Tips

Recently I wrote a post titled How SEO and Social Media are Joining Forces which speaks directly to the question you are asking. But to answer your question in short, it goes back to again…CONTENT. Yes social media is a way to build relationships with other people in your industry, but it is also a great way to spread your content and keep people coming back to your site. If you have new blog posts, tools, whitepapers, videos, inforgraphics, etc…you can leverage the social media presence you have been building to drive people to your site/blog.

The other thing would be to try and optimize what you are saying in your Tweets and social profile updates. Mention other peoples Twitter profiles (@twitterhandle), share other peoples content, use keyword-rich titles along with headlines that are compelling. Don’t forget many social profile pages and upates are being indexed by the search engines, and I only see that playing a larget role in organic search in the future.

Mark Thompson Offline

I got married last year and have two awesome dogs (lab/retriver mix and aussie/boarder collie mix).

I am a huge sports fanatic (unfortunately it is the Buffalo Bills, but at least I am loyal) so I tend to be watching some sporting event going on.

I love to travel when I have the opportunity and visiting new places I have never been before.

Two People to Follow on Twitter

Kristi Hines
Twitter: @kikolani
Website: Kikolani.com

Ann Smarty
Twitter:@seosmarty
Websites: MyBlogGuest.com & SearchEngineJournal.com

Two people who are extremely genuine and love to help others in the industry. Personally I try to surround myself with positive people who are passionate about what they do. Kristi and Ann are definitely two that fit the bill and I have enjoyed getting to know them both.
